Very soon, drummer Jim Gordon was found and the first album, Bread, was recorded. It hit the shelves in January 1969. The song from this album, It Don't Matter To Me, immediately became a national hit. It was followed by the single, Make It With You, which also became a national bestseller. The band played in the soft rock style, performing mainly gentle acoustic ballads; I think the folk rock that was popular in America at that time had a great influence on the band's style. In 1970, Mike Botts came to replace the departed Gordon, and the album Manna was released; The song If from this album became another hit for the group, and the single with it again went gold. In the same year, the album On The Waters was released. In 1972, Royer left the group, and keyboardist Larry Natchell, known for his studio work, came to replace him. The band's fourth album, Baby I'm Want You, was released, the song of the same name from which entered the top ten of the American hit parade. The song Everything I Own took first place. A few months later, fans of the group hold in their hands an album called Guitar Man, the song of the same name from which again reaches the top of the American hit parade; fans have no idea that their favorite group is on the verge of breaking up. Gates is thinking about a solo career (in the same 1973, his first solo album was released, in 1975 - his second). The group announces its breakup. However, in 1976, Gates and Griffiths began working in the studio again; the fruit of this work was another album, Bread. The 1976 album was a disappointing success, and the musicians once again went their separate ways. Two years later, Gates released another solo album, but, having achieved no success, he moved from the city to the countryside, living on his ranch in California. In this sense, his fate is reminiscent of that of John Fogerty, the frontman of Creedence. He returned only in 1994, releasing a solo album, but his return went unnoticed. After Bread's disbandment, Griffiths moved to Nashville, where he worked as a studio musician and then played in a local country band. In 1997, the original lineup performed a series of concerts in several cities across the United States. On January 11, 2005, Jim Griffin, one of the band's leaders, died at the age of 61
