28A33BCE56A3C4CED82A706C1A95470815CEA18CSUBLIME Killin' It cassette tape STUDIO SESSION & LIVE SOUNDBOARD SOURCES cassette tape that supposedly was circulated to some degree before the release of the self-titled album in July 1996. SOUNDBOARD the following notes were found on REDDIT and written by juncopardner2..thanx to him for this notes job ----------------------------------- Sublime STP states on its entry for Killin’ It: WARNING: RUMOR, no evidence this ever existed beyond a traded bootleg which may have been falsely manufactured: Killin' It was really more of an "advance copy" than a demo for the self-titled… An article for the 25th anniversary of Sublime describes how Paul Leary “kept microphones ready around the clock, not just for lead vocals, but also a setup for acoustic numbers, none of which made the final sequence as Nowell originally intended.” It’s hard to say what exactly the author means in describing Brad’s intent for the acoustic numbers. Was this just an off-the-cuff remark Brad had made at some point during the recoding sessions, or had he actually selected specific acoustic tunes for the album? While the anecdote is vague, it is consistent with a couple of acoustic tracks appearing on Killin’ It. Sublime did, apparently, play April 29, 1992 live on one occasion, and a recording of the show is extant but unreleased. Someone who has seen the footages states, “Brad plays April 26 1992 pretty close, messes up the lyrics a smidge and then when its time for the riots part he breaks into gimme my share like the version on second hand smoke” One of the more interesting things about the Killin’ It tape is that the first version of April 29, 1992 heard in the sequence is the Leary/Second Hand Smoke version, while the Kahne version (the one on Sublime) is tacked on at the end. If the Killin It tape is legitimate, this strongly suggests that Brad preferred the Leary version, and it would then be fitting that he would perform that version live. However, we all know how random his freestyles could be, and since he had recorded the Leary version more recently he may have been more familiar with it for that reason. I was always told the live tracks were what they put on Sinsemilla 86-96 (had a DAT, perfect world, freestyle) from CSUDH, but have no proof. I think the live tracks on the Killin It tape came from the 04.10.1996 Boston, MA. It's Same in the End, Smoke Two Joints, and a few others. A link to the tape has circulated on this sub fairly recently. I don't want to draw too much attention to it because apparently sharing that sort of thing can get a sub in trouble, but if you search the sub for bootlegs you'll probably find it. So far I've heard 2 versions of the supposed Killin It tape. They sound quite different (more static on one, faster tape speed on the other) and one is missing a couple songs the other has (Under My Voodoo, Johnny Butt at the start of Side B) but there are a few hints that they do in fact come from the same source, notably a couple of song transitions seem to be more than coincidentally the same, and also one song cuts off at the exact same spot on both tapes. taz
